Dr Gerald Segal

Dr Gerald Segal – A Career of Leadership, Innovation, and Community Impact

Dr Gerald Segal joined Chadstone Road Clinic in 1975, drawn by its progressive structure and collaborative environment. He soon became a driving force in modernising the practice, beginning with the introduction of an individual unit record system—replacing outdated family-based filing—and later pioneering one of the first computerised medical management systems in general practice Australia-wide. By 1983, Chadstone Medical became a digital trailblazer, inspiring many other practices to adopt similar systems.

Beyond the clinic, Dr Segal made significant contributions to the broader medical profession. Encouraged by Dr Rosenhain, he became actively involved with the Australian Medical Association (AMA), first at the local level and then nationally. He served as President of AMA Victoria in 1997 and played a leading role in public health reforms, including:

  • Improving food safety regulations
  • Banning smoking in restaurants and cafes
  • Preventing the establishment of a toxic waste site in Werribee

Nationally, he chaired the Federal Government’s Enhanced Primary Care Taskforce and was instrumental in the introduction of new Medicare care items—enabling patients to access allied health services like physiotherapy and podiatry with Medicare support.

Throughout his career, Dr Segal also remained deeply committed to clinical practice. With initial training in Sports Medicine, Paediatrics, and Asthma, he expanded his skill set under the guidance of respected colleagues to include obstetrics and anaesthetics—a rare combination in general practice today.

More than 50 years later, Dr Segal continues to care for generations of patients, with many long-standing families now spanning three or more generations under his care. His enduring dedication, pioneering spirit, and heartfelt relationships with patients have made him not just a doctor, but a cherished figure in the Chadstone community.
